Compass Mobile Stand
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Compass work with the new iPad (4th gen.)?
Yes, Compass for iPad, as well as several other Twelve South iPad accessories work great with the new iPad (4th generation)!
Is a compact easel sturdy enough for my iPad?
Yes. Compass is made from heavy gauge steel. While it is a small stand, you’ll be surprised by how heavy this little accessory is. It’s perfect for light touching, such as flipping through pages in a book or browsing your iPhoto library. In the low-angle typing mode, you can use the onscreen keyboard with no worries.
When you use iPad to play games that require aggressive punching or poking of the tablet, we always suggest removing iPad from the stand and holding it your hands or using your lap.
Can I charge iPad with the dock connector when iPad placed in portrait mode?
Sure. Compass elevates iPad, leaving plenty of room to attach the Apple Dock Connector Cable, so you can charge and sync your iPad in any orientation - including Portrait mode.
Does Compass have adjustable viewing angles?
Not really. In Easel mode, Compass displays your iPad at 60-degrees. On a smooth secure surface you can adjust the viewing angle slightly by sliding the back leg forward - tilting the iPad in a more upright position. However, we recommend using Compass with the back leg fully deployed. This is the most secure position for Compass and your iPad.
If Compass is made of metal, won’t it scratch my iPad?
No. Compass is forged from solid steel to make it solid and sturdy. Knowing that, we covered every piece that touches your iPad in soft protective silicone. Look closely at the Compass and you’ll see the arm supports, upright legs and even the top logo are covered in soft, subtle, grey-toned padding. These soft pads also help prevent iPad from slipping or shifting when placed upon Compass.
Should I get Compass or BookArc for my iPad?
BookArc for iPad is a beautiful, sturdy iPad stand designed to fit in perfectly at home or the office. When combined with iPad, it creates a sculpture-like configuration that makes a perfect home workstation, charging stand or even digital picture frame. It is not however, particularly portable. It stays on your counter or desk at home when your iPad is on the go.
Compass is the ultimate mobile stand for iPad. It folds out to give you an easel-like display for your iPad in Portrait or Widescreen mode. It even can lean down and become the perfect typing wedge when using the iPad on-screen keyboard. When not in use, Compass folds up into a pocket friendly 7x1 inch package - even slipping into an included padded travel sleeve.
Which Twelve South iPad stand is right for you depends on where you use your iPad most. Is your iPad always by your side during your travels and business trips? Then the ultra-portable Compass is your must-have iPad accessory. However, if your iPad is more of a homebody, used for consuming media, watching movies and YouTube videos , keeping up with Facebook friends and reading books, BookArc may be the perfect work of art to hold your iPad, when you’re done holding your iPad.
Of course the ultimate solution might be to have a Compass and a BookArc!
Should I expect any issues with Compass and Airport Security?
The Compass was designed specifically for travel; to be used anywhere you use your iPad including an airplane. Although It doesn't violate any TSA restrictions we know of, just like your keys in your pockets or other unfamiliar metal items in your carry-on bag, it may help speed things along to take the Compass stand out and send it through separately. The Twelve South team travels with Compass without any problems - except with TSA officers wanting one.
